Date: 24-25 September 2024
Location: Brussels
Organized by: DG HOME
The CERIS annual event, held on 24-25 September 2024 in Brussels, brought together security research practitioners, policy makers, and EPAs to discuss critical cross-cutting issues impacting research and innovation in the security domain. The event, organized by DG HOME, aimed to foster dialogue on online harms and the involvement of practitioners in security research, addressing both immediate concerns and future challenges.
The first day of the event focused on the growing spectrum of online harms, with in-depth discussions on emerging technologies and their implications for online crimes. Special attention was given to the upcoming AI Act and its role in combating online threats.
On the second day, participants addressed the challenges faced by practitioners—such as police authorities, NGOs, and forensic institutes—in contributing to security research consortia. The discussions revolved around identifying good and bad practices in their involvement, and aimed to enhance participation and collaboration across European security research projects.
GEMS Principal Investigator Maja Halilovic Pastuovic contributed to the panel titled "Spectrum of Online Harms," alongside other principal investigators from projects like CC-Driver, FERMI, EITHOS, and 2PS. The panel, moderated by Michele Socco from DG HOME, explored three key areas: leveraging new AI technologies, raising awareness through education and engagement, and fostering better coordination and collaboration across sectors.
The event concluded with the European Commission noting key recommendations put forth by project investigators to address these challenges and enhance security research efforts across Europe.
This annual event continues to play a crucial role in strengthening collaboration and sharing insights to improve the collective response to security threats at a European level.
